8-Bit Machine - Typeface and specimen sheet design

An experimental typeface inspired by the biography The Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder, about computer engineers in the 1980s racing to invent the newest minicomputer. A series of analogue and digital experiments led to a design reflecting the chaos and intensity of their working environment, as well as featuring circuit board components and coding symbols. To create letterforms from this, I spliced it into 8 columns and rows, then collaged 8 pieces together for each character. The result is a typeface that captures both the technological and emotional themes from the book.
